Depends on what you're using it for. For a compact, easy-to-use camera you can carry with you anywhere, I love my Canon Powershot SD400 (Digital Elph). It's small enough to carry in my purse, but the quality of the pics is awesome even when printed at larger sizes (8x10, 11x14). I've had it for almost 2 years and I still love it.
Canon is generally a good brand when it comes to photo equipment. I also have an old-fashioned film camera from Canon.

I've had good luck w/ Nikon cameras. Whatever you get, make sure the camera has a "Sports" exposure mode. One of the most irritating thing about digital cameras is the delay you get. Sometimes two full seconds will pass between the time that I press the shutter, and when the picture is actually taken. Forget about it if you want to take pictures of somebody doing something. Also, keep in mind that it's better to have a lot of smaller-size memory cards that one or two that hold a ton of pictures. What nobody tells you is that the more pictures you have stored on your memory card, the longer the delay is. No matter what kind of card you get (256MB, 512MB, 1GB, etc), be sure to copy them onto your computer on a regular basis.

megapixels are megapixels. sony's are more stylish while canon and fujifilm are simly cameras first, then stylish. whatever works for you is the megapixel and the price. I assume you're not going to be taking professional photos or what not so something at least 4 megapixels will suffice for you. all you have to do is find something with good features and reasonably priced. I have a canon powershot s40 and it works great. you can probably get these for really cheap now since newer models have come out. check ebay for them

We've got a Canon SD550 which is a phenomenal camera. Canon warranty service is excellent, too. Great brand.

I always bought canon and was never dis-satisfied, I bought a vivitar last time and never again, I will always buy canon from now on, I also buy only canon printers , scanners and whatever else I need and they sell in canon, it always works perfect. and is very integrated. so when you hook it to your computer , it will always work out of the box.

There are several really good ones and it depends on your budget. If you want to spend 2-3 hundred dollars I recommend Konica Revio series. Small, compact, attractive, etc.
