did they give you some sort of certificate that documents that you've already done basic training? If they did, you should be able to just present the certificate of completion in lieu of repeating the course.

It depends on what branch of the military you were in, and if you are going back into the same branch. I was in the Air Force and I enlisted in the Army. The Army is the branch that requires prior service individuals to go to the Warrior Transition Course that the other respondent was talking about. The WTC is indeed like bootcamp, contrary to what others may say. I saw quite a few people injured from the rigorous training. Most of the recruiters mysteriously did not know what it was all about! I saw it firsthand though, when it was at Fort Knox. It was taught by drill instructors and the whole bit. Anyway, I digress.....but that is what would happen if you were to join the Army. Good luck to you!

It all depends on your previous time in service and your age. Another consideration is the RE (re-enlistment) code on your DD Fm 214.

You will have to go through basic training again, and you with your prior service, you will either come in as an E-2 or 3. Check with your recruiter for more info.

Here's a link to the pertinent regulation. Do a search under prior service.

I am a retired Chief Petty Officer from the United States Navy, ...I am also what the Navy refers to as a "NaVet". This is a term that identifies me as having "broken service". In other words, I got out of the Navy (completely out, not even in the reserves) and then returned after three years. Other services call broken service returnees "OSVETS". To make this answer as short as possible, I was out for over three years and when I returned to the Navy, they restored me to my former paygrade and rate and even gave me back all my time in rate and time in service! And, ...I did NOT have to repeat boot camp. However, you will probably have to go to what the Navy called a "TPU" (Temporary Processing Unit) while they re-construct your service jacket and pay record. generally, this means you'll go to some training base or installation and wait for your PCS order to come through while standing security or gate watches, working in the mess hall, etc.

I know of no service that requires you to do basic training more than once. You may have to take a reduction in rank after 9 years, and go through additional training for a skill, but no basic training again!

make sure you check out the re-enlistment bonuses for your mos and you probably already know to make sure its on your re-enlist contract before signing.. i would think though you will have to do the same PT as you did during advanced though...ask the recruiter.

The Army does not require a second basic training - you get some sort of refresher course on new weapons & such.

I believe you have to go through the last three weeks to re-qualify for weapons and fitness test. that's all you should have to do. A recruiter can give you more details.
