I have a factory Honda stereo. I hook my iPod up to it through the cassette adapter. It sounds fine, but I'm wondering how much better it would sound if I put in a relatively inexpensive aftermarket system ($150 stereo, $100 6-1/2 inch speakers). Would it sound THAT much better? I would like to get some more bass, but I'm not going to add a subwoofer. So what do you think, would it be a dramatic improvement, or just a minor improvement?

Let me clarify by saying that I have a basic Honda stereo in it (not premium sound), with four factory Pioneer 6-1/2" speakers, each is stamped with a rating of 13 watts.

If I upgrade, I'll be putting in a $150-$200 head unit, so probably around 50 watts peak power, or approximately 18 RMS, to each channel. I would also put in four new 6-1/2" speakers, something basic like Sony or Pioneer.

Would the new setup give me a lot more bass (as I mentioned, I don't want to mess around with a sub), and a lot clearer highs, than my basic Honda factory radio and low-power Pioneer speakers already do? I'm not really dissatisfied with what I have now, but I wonder how much better it could be just for a few hundred bucks.

actually u will get much much clearer highs, louder with a little more bass not much more if u do it right. a sony deck with some 2 way pioneer speakrs is good enough, but i suggest infinity speakers. oh and as far as the diffrence on the ipod sound, the difference between using that tape adaptor to your factory stereo and an aftermarket CD player with iPOD controller built into it, is day and night difference. good luck

depends
was your honda stereo an upgrade system, or stock?
if it was stock, you probably will not hear any difference, if you had a "premium" stereo, you may even have a down grade in quality.

if you want better sound, take a look at an inline ipod antenae input (not the transmitter)
if you want dramatically better sound a better aftermarket system, with inputs (for the ipod) and separates for the speakers. then you can add an amp/crossover etc later if you want but make sure the "better aftermarket" has rca type outputs if that is the route you want to go.

In older days yes but nowadays factory radios are just as good or better. I have a factory Bose speaker system with a good amp and factory radio and I can thump it if I want to. It came with the Grand Prix when I bought it new

Just the head unit would be an improvement.
Unless you buy a luxury car, most factory head units are pretty basic.

yes there would be a great improvement..as for bass you probably will not get tomuch out of the 61/2 unless it is designed for bass and not highs

Try and get a glimpse of your stock units info sheet... max output and THD blah, blah, blah and then compare those numbers to the unit you want to buy

You probably won't hear much or any difference at all with an inexpensive stereo...
