I always buy the same brand, Nutro Max cat. And I usually change up the flavor I buy for him because he usually really likes a new flavor. But this time I bought the roasted chicken which is shaped different and hes being a punk about it. I also have a kitten so he tries to eat the kittens food all the time.

He is eating his food, but not as much as hes trying to eat the kittens, so I have to feed the kitten in a different room.

My question is why he could be reacting this way? Could there be something wrong with this food? Hes usually not too picky.

kittens need more protein and fat so their food contains more of the yummy stuff so of course he wants it...
Chicken is always the best (lamb, or turkey the second best)
Nutro Max is a lower quality... Nutro Natural Choice is better and he will eat less and poop less too

you should always stay with the same flavor.. and always avoid fish since fish is high in calcium it contributes to urinary problems in cats

the new food could be outdated - smell the food

It isn't always a good idea to switch flavors on animals. They don't get bored with some flavors like we do. And it is not good for the cat to eat the kitten food, it has way too many calories for the cat. If you change foods, then do it slowly, give 90% old food, 10% new food for a few days, then 80% old food and 20% new food keep doing this to change them over. Otherwise you can be in for then to not eat or cause them to have diarrhea. Good luck.

The reason you should use a variety of foods with your cat is not for the "flavor". Cats should have a variety of protein sources in their food. Long-term use of solely one protein can lead to allergies. Try a venison and pea (Natural Balance), I think NB has a duck and something too. Haven't seen one with just turkey as the protein source. The Nutro is most likely chicken or maybe a mish-mash of protein sources. Your cat will have less problems with food if you stick to a single source protein in each bag.

Someone else has given instructions as to how to switch different foods. If you follow those about the gradual mixing of old with new you will not get a "don't like that one" from your cat.

cats sometimes dont like change. My cat got mad at me when I changed the litter, and I used to feed him a certain type of turkey, and after a while, he just got tired of it. Could you imagine eating Taco Bell all the time, when there are days when you want like.... I dont know, Burger King instead? Mix in the new stuff with the old, and see if he likes it than. If not, buy something else.

And about the kitten eating the other cat's food. put the older cat's food on like a counter, and the little one's on the floor, the baby shouldnt be able to jump too high yet.

Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Your cat is jealous of the new kitten. Cats don't want change, home, food, company etc. Whatever your cat enjoys eating....buy the same thing, same flavor. I made the same mistake before, i figured, yes give them variety so they are familiar with the flavors, they (have 2 cats) just sniffed it and looked at me like they were saying "what were u thinking"

Have you tried mixing in a bit of the kittens food with it? I'm assuming, of course, the kittens food is different.

He is jealous of course which might be the biggest problem. Give him plenty of attention and hopefully he'll get over being jealous.

Try to mix her food in with the old stuff and gradually put less of it in and less of the old stuff until it is all new. He doesn't like that you changed his old food, he wants his own stuff. If he has to, he'll invade on anothers food, just so it will taste normal.
