My jack russell was 8 when my son was born and everyone told me that I was being a bad mother for keeping the dog. It didn't help that there was a report in the press of a jack russell that killed a baby.
What they didn't bother to find out was that I'd spent 6 months training the dog to prepare for the birth. He was a normal healthy dog and he acted normally. He was sat on, pushed around in a buggy, dressed, brushed, fed scraps, photographed and drawn on. He was inseperable from my son until he died of old age.
If you take your pup to puppy training classes you'll have nothing to worry about, the biggest threat to pups is toddlers falling on them and breaking the pups shoulder blade, or trapping their tail in a door.
As for disease, get the vet to de-flea, worm and vaccinate your pup. Dogs carry less diseases and parasites than cats. Clear up any mess as soon as it is laid, and teach your pup to use one spot as a toilet not the whole yard.

Dogs are invaluable to busy mums and their kids. How else are kids supposed to get rid of crusts, carrots, peas and other undesirable foodstuffs on their plate without mum finding out and nagging them?
And what better way to teach a kid about compassion, kindness and caring for another living thing? Kids can learn to be unselfish for their pets. And a dog is better than a live teddy bear. It cares, and it'll never tell your secrets, and is always your mate.

Hi loads of people have dogs when they have children and there has been no harm before, unless of couse your dog is vicious but i dont think you should not have a dog because of your daughter. If your dog has had all its injections and is wormed every 3-6 months then your daughter is fine. I had a dog when i was young and i never got any disease and never got savaged. I have got 5 dogs now and im still ok. Your nan is probably just looking out for your daughter and you. I think maybe when your nan was younge,r if you had a young child you had to get rid of any animals you had because of disease and other things, but everything is fine now. Just keep an eye on her when she plays with the dog and get your dog checked regular and everything will be fine.

Seeing as we have been living side by side with dogs since the stoneage and mankind is still here then I very much doubt it. It is good for kids to have a pet as it instills care and responsibility in them. although it is not out of the question that a dog could savage a child it is more likely that the dog would be a protector and alarm raiser if things were amiss. The only thing that I can say is to make sure your child does not come into contact with the dogs poo because there are microscopic worms in dog poo that can; I say can,not will cause blindness in very young children. But it stands to reason that you will not let your child come into contact with it. So if you keep your garden free of dog poo and dont let the dog lick your childs face (who wants a dog to licking their face anyway yuk!!) then things will be great i'm sure. If in doubt then consult your vet and mention about this worm i'm sure he/she will allay your fears. Its better to get professional advice than to listen to gran, or me come to that.

False. Make sure you train your puppy well, tell your nan to mind her own beeswax. Having a pet has actually been proven to strengthen the immunity system and is also a good way to reduce stress and heart disease.

You can get worms, coccidia, giardia, fleas and ticks should be you biggest concern. The others you have to ingest the feces so be sure that if nan brings it up again ask her who got a disease and why were they ingesting dog poo. Keep your hands clean and clean up any feces from pets with bleach and you should be fine.

it's not true at all as long as you bring the dog to the vet when it's sick and as long as it has it's vaccinations it will be just fine.
get involved in a training class or a puppy class and as long as
you teach it that your daughter is someone to be respected
and not a chew toy it will be fine.Since your dog is just a puppy however it might nip her sometimes.

People can get rabies from dogs. They can also get lepto from dogs. People can catch certain fungi from afflicted dogs but all these are extremely rare. People can get fleas from their dogs too, but that's also rare. Generally speaking, it's easier for a dog to catch disease from a human.
Keep your dog well cared for and healthy, and the chances of catching a disease from any dog should be virtually impossible.
