I liked rum and coke the first two times I had it. But then I had it with Bacardi rum, which is high quality, I'm told, and I thought it was nasty.

Can anyone tell me what brand I should try?

I also liked tropical rum, if anyone can help me out with a brand on that too?

Don't know who told you Bacardi was top shelf, but they lied. Bacardi is among the best of the cheap stuff, but that doesn't make it good.

Cruzan's rums are good among the cheaper rums.

Appleton Estate is my favorite mid-priced rum. I would say it's a BEST VALUE pick among rums.

Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, Captain Morgan's Private Stock and Voodoo Spiced Rum are both very good if you like a sweeter rum.

Malibu and Parrot Bay are two very good coconut rums; and Cruzan makes mango, pineapple and banana flavors, too. Orange-flavored rums that I've tried are generally medicinal-tasting.

My all-time favorite rum is Ron Zacapa. It's expensive (about $30 per bottle), but I think it's worth every penny. It's delicious straight or on the rocks, but also makes a killer mixed drink.

There is quite a few good rums. If you into spiced rums try Captain Morgan. Dark rums Cockspur(Barbados), Mount Gay Elipse Rum(Barbados) El Dorado Rum(Guyana), White Label Rum(Trinidad),Brugal(Dominica), Appleton Estates(Jamaica),Havana Club(Cuba). There is also a variety of flavored rum from Bacardi.
If your adventurous you could try the overproof rums but it not for the weak at heart. I would suggest Wray & Nephews Overproof Rum or Puncheon Rum.
You could also try some Bush rum(Babaash rum-Jamaican/Trinidad Slang), it like moonshine rum or homemade rum and it alot stronger than overproof rum. It would not recommend it.

My favorite is El Dorado the older the rum the much better. It has a smoother taste.

Bacardi has different versions out there too.
Captain Morgan is good.
Anything that's not on the bottom shelf in the liquor store is usually okay.
If you add a few drops of lime juice to your rum and coke you'll have a Cuba Libra....

MALIBU... it is coconut flavored rum. (try it with pineapple juice)....or my specialty...(1 part vodka, 3/4 part Malibu, pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine....I call it F* Up in a Cup!)

You probably had Captain Morgan the first time you had the rum and coke...it is the best rum for it

Malibu is coconut flavored if you like tropical. For other rums, just stick to Coke.
