I would stick with the factory hard top... Lots of folks that have bought the factory hard top have eventually turned around and sold it (including myself).
Jeep TJs (Wranglers) from 1997-2006 all have the same body style, so the hardtop from any one of these years will fit.
Your best bet in finding one for sale is to check out Craig's list or get involved with a local jeep club.
Look at spending about 1000 bucks for a top that is in good condition.

i have a 2004 jeep wrangler and i had the same issue. i called the dealer and a new hardtop is about $2,000 so i ruled that out. i looked around for after market hartops which cost anywhere from 1200 to 1500 but i asked a dealer tech and he said that they dont always fit right. so i went on ebay, picked up a used factory top for $600. the thing was mint and was used for liek a month. buying a used on is the way to go

Your first choice should be a OEM. And the dealer can finance it.
Then you can go get a Best top or Outland, both aftermarket, and get multiple choices that will go from USD1K to USD2.5K.
But the real question is...
Why do you want a hardtop?
I have a '84 CJ7 that has the hard top and I hate it, but being it a 3rd car/truck I find expensive to buy a 700 bucks rag top for a weekends truck, so I use it without the top. With the issue that it is space comsuming to store.

Honestly, don't buy a Best Top. Factory parts is always the best way to go, they fit better, last longer, and are part of the Jeep Manufacture Warranty. I was a Jeep accessory installation technician and have delt with Best Tops, trust me you get what you pay for.

I found over the years(and there's been a lot of those) that it's actually warmer in the winter with a soft-top.

hard top is about $1000-1500. You should have gotten one from the dealer, then they could have financed it.
