Birds have cycles of NREM and REM sleep, but with some differences. One of the most striking differences is that both NREM and REM sleep episodes are quite short in birds; their NREM sleep episodes average only about 2 1/2 minutes, and REM sleep episodes only 9 seconds. Also, most birds do not lose muscle tone during REM sleep as consistently as mammals do, which is understandable, since many birds sleep while standing or perching. Some birds, such as pheasants and partridges, sleep on the ground. Water fowl can sleep while swimming. Some parrots sleep hanging down. It is suspected that some birds sleep aloft during long transoceanic flights.

the muscles in birds legs and feet can actually "lock" so that when they do sleep, they don't lose their grip and fall off of the perch. generally they will sleep in couples or small flocks for protection, where one or two of the birds will keep watch for predators while the others rest.

They stand on their perch and close their eyes I guess. Sometimes they put their head in their wing but they don't stand on one leg.

they lay flat on their backs inthe middle of their cage and snore like a BULLDOZER! and then they steal the covers and try to blame you for keeping them from sleep. sometimes they sleepwalk and eat ALL of the carrots from the frige and then leave the door open and you wake up wondering what happened, because little tweety is just staring sweetly up at you from his cage. but you KNOW it was him, so you have a tickle fight you know you will win(because of your size) and you torture tickle him until he admits to it. sheesh. birds.
