A hallmark is an official mark (or a series of marks) made in metal that indicates the fineness of the metal and the manufacturer's mark. For example, a hallmark of 925 indicates 925 parts of gold per 1000 weight.
Just to be sure, I'd still take it to a jeweler to check it out.

Rub the "gold" on the top of your hand. If it leaves a black/greenish black mark you have a real piece of gold (but this only works if the iron in your blood is low).
You could also take it to a jeweler. They could tell you.
Last option is to wear it, nonstop. When washing hands, etc. Fake gold will leave a green ring around your finger.

In all big jewelry stores, an appraiser visits once a month for a free evaluation and appraised value which is accepted by insurance companies. Like Zale's Jewelry

925 means that it is sterling silver - good quality but not as pricey as gold. Silver tarnishes so you will need to get some good cleaner.

Goldrings have a 10k or 14k on the inside of the ring. I would go to a jewelery store and see what they say.

there will be a tiny place that will say ___K. Probably 10K these days. If you can't see it, go to a jeweller.
