I know they die, but how come? What does the salt physically do to it?

From Backyard Nature:

"The big danger in the lives of land snails and slugs is drying out. Gardeners know that one way to rid themselves of lettuce-eating snails and slugs is to sprinkle them with salt. The salt causes water to leave their bodies, and they shrivel up fast!"

Of course, I've also seen postings about "shriveling, screaming, shrieking, oozing, etc.", so we may be talking more of Wicked Witch type of thing here -- LOL!! But not really my style -- besides, the salt is *not* good for your garden, so don't do it where the plants grow, please! -- Later!

Salt causes exosmosis. Snail looses its water and ultimately dies.

Because their skin is tender and gelatinous salt burns their skin extracting the water they need to live and dehydrates them. That is why the next day they are hard dry and shrink. Ecology is nice when we respect each other habitats.

Do not do it, it is very cruel and snail are cute to have in the garden

Are you sure they die? I've never heard of that. i wouldn't think that it would kill them. Well, maybe it's something in the salt that they can't take. Just like when you get a cut or something and if something salty gets into it burns. Maybe that's why they die
