Why do parents smugly say you'll understand when you are older? as when you get old you find they were lying or stupid along with most 'grown ups' or corrupt or living in lala land making decisions on the basis of everyone else is doing it (reminds me of smoking in school) oe as their parents did it...

Paresnt, aunts, uncles, friend of the family, other old mates parents, teachers, and loads of them especailly those with pre 60s thinking

The smoking point was more of a case of people doing it as all their mates are...

When people get older replace smoking with thinking anyone in a suit must be a professional.

Or not making out in public

*************

Also the thing is these decisions are NOT based on their experience... thery seem to completely forget their own experience and become total hypocrits...

Like all those politicians who say only evil doers go to nightclubs...

When they were total party animals and had a jolly good time and there was no trouble...

Or how about when they keep kids in the dark regarding sex ed saying nobdoy does stuff unless they are told about it when they know bloody well it was not the case for them

My biochemistry does not suit drugs or drink i I can't get drunk it does not work on me...likewise dope etc...

So not saying alchi or druggy here...

but they and as said their group acted like they new all about drugs or the rave cultures etc... but when I did a massive project on them and leanred alot enough to try testing the paretsn its clear they can't answer any questions and actually ahve everything wrong... ie those who think heavey hetla and rave groups are the bad guys whilst I see no fights, no attoiude, no aggression in those scenes...

But all the violence trouble and more serious drugs are in the chav or nice dress smart 'normal' scenes

Likewise these so called smart older folk can't answer questions on the differences between psycedelics MDEA. MDMA, MDA, LDS, or ICE, PCP, Empathogenics, amphetmaines and opiates . Real simple stuff like that. Or the difference bewteen crack based subcultures and more hippy type psycedelic based subcultres.

They just see drugs as something scarey in the papers instead of having been smart enough to thoughly research the thing whilst say kids where icubating in their mother in the same way you should study the wildlife in Australia and get spider antidotes for the house.

They just think they know but give them a test they know jack shiot

33 and yet to see a shred of evidence that they had a clue as none has proved factual... In fact the older I ge the sheer level of ignorance is outstanding and the lies... And All those prevously see as the good guys appear lies and those thold to be bad in many cases where the good guys... Not just parents but that whole church community and similarly from pre 60s cultures or thinking...

As said a typical one would be drugs and cultures like hippies or ravers... turns out when you learn about thses things through expert agencies then quiz them they get it wrong.

Most thinking thier little darlings aint doing the things they do, Oh and of course the big lie...
Studying gets you a good job as opposed to social skills.

Yet to employ more then a fraction of what I know and when I do the dumb authourity figures don't like it.

Like if you show what you know in interview you are marked down

"Why do parents smugly say you'll understand when you are older?"
i'd guess, as with my parents, they either don't know the answer, are affraid to say, or (most likely reason) have never learned to communicate well in that area.
IMO, poor communication skills and attitudes blocked my parents from 'talking' with us kids about many significant things in life - starting with sex and feelings!

Well.... They smoked in school back in a time when you could. Then.. when they set the rules down about no smoking in school.. My generation did it to rebel. I am a mom.. and the only time I turn and look as you say.. Smugly at my child and say the words you will understand when you are older.. because when you finally do have a child.. and they start acting as disrespectful or as rude as you have. My parents said the same thing to me.. and you know what.. they WERE right.. there was no lying..
Have you tried talking to your parents? I doubt it. My son and I have a great relationship. I don't lie to him, he does not lie to me. If he has questions.. I answer them, when he looks confused.. that is when I also say.. when you get older... you will understand.. some things cannot be explained.

"No analytical, intelligent thinking on devising better solutions" - sounds like you don't really want to know.. or don't care about the real answer.. you just want an answer that is going to suit you.. not the truth..

I am "older" now, and actually DO understand. I didn't have a clue when I was younger what they were on about, but as time has gone on I've seen it all unfolding. Everything they told me about people, relationships; all the silly fables and stories; all the disciplinary action... I understand it now. As much as I hate to say it, THEY WERE RIGHT!!! Not about everything ofcourse. Lord knows that!!! But about most of growing up, being a grown up, how to deal with learning about yourself etc...

I'm incredibly grateful to my parents now, and still ask them for advice on some things- not everything! Don't want to massage any egos!!! How old are you by the way..? Maybe when you get to that "older", you WILL understand...

Parents are big kids, and you'll eventually end up looking after them. Most probably trying to protect you from making the same mistakes as they did. No, ofcourse that doesn't justify them lying to you. They may have gone about it in the wrong way, but think of the motives... Try not to be so bitter man!!

They say that because they base it on experience. Young people tend to experiment on things and learning the hard way seem to be more appropriate to say. parents should let their children experience the world as long as it will not be a threat to their physical and psychological safety.
the more it hurt, the more you remember. And yes, when you grow up and you realized they were lying and u did not understand better...then maybe you did not have enough relevant experience. In some cases like smoking and using other drugs, you are better off not trying it especially if you have addictive personality or parents who are. That one, I can say, you will understand when you are older.

Sounds like you're mad at your parents. Don't know the particular situation, but the phrase, "you'll understand when you are older" should be changed to "You'll understand when you have children of your own."

As for smoking in school... Of course you shouldn't smoke in school. Of course your parents are going to tell you not to. YOU SHOULDN'T. (Even if they did.) Didn't you ever hear the saying, "Do as I say, not as I do"? What should they say, "Yeah, go ahead - smoke. I did it. It's great. It might kill you in a few years, but if your lucky you might just end up with emphysema or lung cancer or yellow teeth, etc...

Parents shouldn't pretend to be perfect, but until you have your own children, I wouldn't pass too much judgment.

Its easier for parents to say that. It gets them out of really decusing the problem.
