Hello! I know some of the other people on here keep saying that the "needs of the military" come first, but you also have to keep your dreams and goals in mind! It is a big step to take when joining the military. Just because you want to go after a certain job does not mean you are any less worthy of serving our country! I would totally stick with your decision. If you are at MEPS in front of the counselor waiting to pick your job, tell them what you want. If they say it is not available, then don't take anything else! There are always new slots becoming available, even in the jobs they say don't have openings. It is somewhat dependent on the school schedule (such as when they are doing the air traffic controller school) so that may affect when you would actually ship out. I was in the Air Force, and I originally signed up for medical lab tech. The secondary school (after basic training) for that job was 52 weeks. About 2 weeks before basic was to start, I broke my foot, which disqualified me for that job at that time. I would have had to wait a whole year to get back in to that job. I know all of the branches are different, but my point is to stick with what you want! I ended up being impatient and letting the recruiter talk me in to a different job and I hated it so much I got out. :) And if your ASVAB score really is that good, you can go to another branch and they would gladly take you. Sorry so lengthy, but I hope some of my info helps! Good luck!
PS: I wasn't going to say anything, but I am glad that the ASVAB does not test spelling....lol :)

They will put you in the job if you fit the profile. Just because you tested well, there may not be a need, or you do not have the mental profile they are looking for. You of course can pay for this school yourself in the civilian sector if this is what you chose to do. In the military the needs of the mission come first. If you can't deal with that then maybe you need to look else where for free training.

If the position is not open, they won't offer it. The needs of the Army come first.
If you don't get what you want, get up and leave. It's that simple. If you are otherwise qualified, and the job is not available, go to another branch. See if the Navy, Marines or Air Force have an opening.

You can make it clear that you will take your skills elsewhere. A believe all five branches of the armed services, as well as the FAA are desperate for ATC.
Same thing happened to me, USAF had me all wound up for a job, then said no the day before I was going to take my physical. I went next door to the Army and got exactly what I wanted.

Do the research. Learn everything you can about the ins and outs of what it is your trying to do. So when you go to them they can't try to spin the facts. I guarantee they will have no choice to help you if you let them know from the beginning that they can't fool you.
However, if what you want is just not available, you may have to wait until there is an opening.
Remember, this is your career, if at all possible don't let anyone else make your decisions for you.

Military needs come first. If they want you, and there is a position in the job you want you can get it. If they do not have a place for you in the job you requested then go home. You do not HAVE to joing the military. If it is only about the money to you we do not want you.

don't sign unless its in writing on your contract...the army is the only branch who guarantees a mos (job) if you qualify so if its another branch they may not be able to accommodate you.
