My male dog (who is 2 years old) has always been ok with this schedule.. ever since he was a puppy. During the week, he goes out before we leave for work and again before bed around 9... and he's completely content with it.. and of course weekends are different and he is usually outside all day.. I told someone that my dog only goes out twice and she was appalled.. what do you think?

If the dog is not doing anything in the house, then how can it be bad? Do you really want to pick up more doggy doo doo than necessary?

It doesn't matter what you tell some people, they will find something to be appalled by.

Consider yourself lucky that the dog is doing his business outside and not in the house during the day and forget about it.

What time do you get home from work?????? If you get home from work does he go out then?? I assume you go to work early since bed is 9. I must say I am kind of appalled too. I think it is asking a lot for the dog to be on this schedule. I don't think he should HAVE to have this schedule. He may like a dog walker to come and walk him during the day. I think it is wrong to have a "weekend" pet anyway. So many people have them and spend very limited time with them during the week and then want them on the weekend. I would not like to be on a schedule where I could only pee twice daily. He may not be drinking enough either since he may feel he can't.
I guess I would consult my vet about the schedule. I think down the road you can be asking for trouble. If he gets sick and needs to drink more or has diarrhea, he can get anxiety over messing up the schedule he is used to.

They say that your dog should only be able to hold it for an hour, for how ever many months they are... up to a year. So, technically, yes they can hold it for 12 hours if they are 1 year +. If you can let your dog out three times, that is more ideal (at the least). Once in the morning, once when you get home and once before bed. As someone said, they should be allowed to relieve themselves about 30 minutes after they eat.

Well a dog should only go to the bathroom a couple times. Not as much as humans. They don't eat or drink as much as we do. But if you are at work and your dog is in the house he will hold it until you get home. But make sure that he is outside on the weekends a lot. To let him get fresh air.

I go for walks with my dog around 6:00 in the morning and again at 6:00 in the evening. She is also 2 and happy with that schedule, even on weekends when she's out running around the yard she only relieves herself at that schedule.

She's also a small dog and doesn't drink too much.

I would think he would need to go out when you get home from work & then perhaps that evening again. We run our dogs in & out all of the time except of course when they are in their cage while we are gone. We have a fenced in yard though & they get to stay out & play for awhile during potty breaks. I would say at least 3 times a day - just add that extra break when you get home from work.

It isn't bad that your dog does this. Are you feeding or giving him water only morning and night? Because every 30-45 minutes after a dog eats or drinks he will use the bathroom. This is also true with playing and excercising. So if you are feeding him or giving water only those times its normal.

I would recommend taking him out when you get home from work as well. Try it for a few days, it might make him more comfortable. If he doesn't go then or if he starts to not go at night then twice a day is fine. If he's extremely well behaved he might just hold it to make you happy even if it is an unpleasant feeling for him.

As long as he's not having accidents or in distress, he's fine. If he needed to go out more times while you were home, he'd let you know. Don't worry about what other people think when you know that your dog is happy, healthy, and cared for.

yes your dog is used to it but really it is not good for the dogs bladder, it is not good for them to hold it and could eventually couse a urinaly problem or a kidney problem and trust me you dont want that because it is a terrible thing for an animal to have, maybe you could have a neighbor kid let the dog out when they get home after school or something!
