I believe it is because in the old days (pre scientific proof to the contrary) it was believed that viruses and bacteria were actually insects.

It comes from the fact that people when referring to the bacteria that causes colds often describe them as microscopic bugs.

A bug is a parasite and a parasite is what passes a cold from one person to the next so I got a bug derived from that.
