I just got a one year old poodle (supposedly spayed) that I think has gone into heat. I have no experience with this and am wondering how long the bloody discharge will last, as of how there isn't much, will it get heavier? How long does this last? Needless to say, we will be visiting the vet VERY soon.
Also, since she is white, I cannot get rid of the tear stains. How can I get rid of them and is there anything that can be done to help or prevent them?

The "spotting" will last 7-10 days. Afterward she will be in "standing heat". In other words, she will be standing to be bred or in true heat. Keep her away from males during this time for about 2 weeks or until her vulva is no longer swollen. You can get some "pants" at petsmart or similar place. Do not buy the pads that go in them but instead go to the dollar store and buy unscented ladies panty liners - same thing but much cheaper. This will keep the discharge off of your floor and furniture.
Tear stains are from protien in the diet according to a groomer friend of mine. You can go to the site where I buy my show supplies and get some whitener like they use on show dogs to clean it. www.cherrybrook.com.
good luck!!

There should be no bloody discharge is she was spayed. Is there a scar on her tummy?

If she is in heat you have to wait it out. Avoid male dogs and have her fixed soon.

Those tear stains are tough. I don't know the answer to that.

Ummm... spayed bitches do not exhibit bloody discharge. She is not spayed! You have about 2 weeks to suffer and worry about her getting pregnant so don't let her out of your sight. It will reach a peak of discharge half-way through her cycle so when it drops off a bit, you have another 5 days... or so.

it usually last a couple weeks...i have 2 females.
They always try to hump each other, it's sad.
The discharge shouldn't get real heavy---and they do make diapers for them, no joke.

I know little dogs always have tear stains---especially white poodles. Maybe wash her face everyday with a wet washcloth??
