Four guys went to lunch and each paid $5.00 to the waiter for a total of $5.00 x 4 = $20.00. The owner recognized them as students and gave a $5.00 discount. The waiter took $1.00 for his tip and returned $1.00 to each guy. Now: Each guy paid only $4.00 for the lunch (got $1.00 back) so the total cost for their lunch was $4.00 X 4 = $16.00 + $1.00 the waiter took + the $4.00 returned to the 4 guys making a total of $21.00!! HOW COME since we started with $20.00!! Have fun solving this Math question!

You're misleading us by saying that the cost of their lunch was $4 x 4 = $16 + $1 tip.

$1 tip was given already, its part of the $5 discount. So with the tip, it's 16$. or else, the total cost of the lunch would be $15, and not $16.

Problem: You added an extra dollar by including the tip a second time :)

The total paid out was 16.00. 15 for the lunch and 1.00 for the tip! They each paid 1/4 of the tip so the lunch was 3.75
(3.75 x 4 =15) and 25 cents towards the 1 dollar tip. this equals 4 bucks!

you dont count the tip because that was already figured out when the waiter took it from the discount...thats the cost of the meal $16...the owner gave them a $5 discount - $1 tip so they actually got back four dollars making it 16 then so the tip in the original problem was figured in twice. so $16 + $4 returned to the guys = $20.

This is a variation of the hotel riddle where you have to ask "what happened to the other 3 dollars". Obviously there are false assumptions made in the story, but you would be amazed how upset you can make an individual when you tell this story orally

20 because 16 + the money the waiter took plus the money returned

That is a variation of the hotel problem. It is bad math. You don't add the $1, you subtract it giving $15 which is the cost of the lunch.

It 4x4 for the lunch, that makes 16,
16+1(tip) makes 17, and that`s all
