Not as such - athlete is a term used for people that partake in physical/strenuous sports (sitting on ya butt for several days really doesn't count)

I would class fishing as a hobby - or the ultimate battle of whits between a creature with limited intelligence & a 10 second memory span, and a fish....

I guess many of them have athletic feet though...

I go fishing sometimes, but I don't think I am an athletes. I consider fishing recreational. Something for the parents to take out the kids for, something for people to hang out and fish. I guess deep sea fishing is different than freshwater fishing since it requires more strength and power, but still, it's not athletic. Atheletes is for someone who is contantly moving and sweats a lot, and is in shape.

They are not athletes, and fishing is not a sport. At best it is an outdoor activity. It is no different than hunting or watching or driving in nascar. Shouldn't you have to alter your heart rate and bpm if you were an athlete? Unless drinking and fishing is a sport.

People who hunt "game" fish such as blue marlin, tuna etc. have to be fit as it sometimes can take hours of battling with these big fish to finally land them. It also takes some stamina to stand for hours in the waves when you go sea fishing or standing in fresh water rivers trout or salmon fishing, so in a way you could call fishermen athletes, but not the slugs that sit by the river all day drinking beer, munching chips and catching tiddlers!

Kind of. I practice fishing every now and then. And you do some sort of light exercise when trowing the cane and specially when pulling a big fish. You also have to get to the right spot, so you walk and climb around. Every now and then you might fall into the water and have to swim in extreme condictions.
Yes, I am an athlete!

Yes i would say so, there are some pretty strong fish out there and so, you would have to be pretty strong to real a big one in. There are sport fishers and there are competitions, (my Uncle is a sport fisher). So yes, I would say sport fishermen are athletes.

But. If you are just fishing for the fun of it, I would say probably not, go ahead and have a good time, don't worry about pulling in a big one for the cup! lol Hope I helped!

No, it's the least physically trying sport there is, with the possible exception of competitive sea-angling. An athlete is someone at the peak of physical fitness.
