The main difference between and MD and a DO is that a Doctor of Osteopathy is educated in a school whose philosophy points to the importance of bone, its physiology and mechanical activities as a major core of the body's health. Correcting posture, body mechanics and bone nutrition is regarded as part of a holistic a way of curing or avoiding disease. Outside of this philosophy, the system of medical education education and process of developing treatment skills in schools of osteopathy are virtually the same as that encountered in Medical Schools granting an MD degree. In the uniformed services medical treatment facilities are just as likely to have DOs as MDs serving on their professional staff.

A D.O. is a doctor of osteopathy while an M.D. is referred to as an allopath. Much in their training is similar, but D.O. schools train with a heavier focus on the function of the skeleton, the physiology of bone and the mechanical structure of the human. Both can and do apply for standard residency programs and fellowships and both are licensed (in the U.S.) after taking and passing the same board exams. There are a great many DOs and MDs practicing side by side in large and small hospitals nationwide.
