The US Embassey in the country that your spouse is from will have all the needed information for you to plan your move. They will answer all of your questions and will most likely also have a very helpful website as well.

Count on 6 months AT BEST. Probably longer. I just brought my fiancee (now wife) from the Phils and we started in September 2005, arrived in the states with her May 25. 9 months and we had no hitches. Bomb threats at embassy, etc., shuts those places down and adds time to your process.
I understand there is more paperwork and the process is probably a little tougher to bring the wife vice fiancee, but don't know for sure.

Why wait, just get a ticket to Meh-hee-co and sneak across the border along with all the others.
Probally take.........maybe one week at the most.
