i do not have any insurance for dental. i would like to know if i can do anything at home for the time being.

Having a fear of dentists and their prices I have two nerves exposed in my mouth! I use ambesol and a temporary filling I bought at CVS or Walgreens or any drug store. I swish my mouth with warm salt water twice per day (morning and night) when I brush and It helps. I've also swished with warm Capt' Morgan once in awhile if it really hurts bad and that helps! You can also rub a Bayer children's aspirin (small orange chewable pill)on the sore tooth to make the pain go away! Good Luck!

I had a very sensitive tooth...anbesol (sp?) actually hurt. I used sensodyne. Turns out...the tooth was sensitive because my bite is off & I clench & grind alot (I dont know how this works but thats what the dentist said) AND I was brushing too vigorously. It was just exposed too much at the gum line. I took it easy on the brushing. It hurt even when AIR would touch it. When you say the nerve is exposed, do you mean near the gumline??

Probably should see if you can find a free dental clinic. But when I've had tooth sensitivity in the past I used sensodine (the spelling might be off but it's a tooth paste that helps with desensitization) Enamelon works well also. Good luck

Put some hard liquor in your mouth and swish it around the nerve. This will dull the pain.
You could use Anbesol too, but the liquor is more fun!

Only temporary relief--you might try Orajel or Ambosol.
