8 year old girls are typically much more gentle than an 8 year old boy. You don't have to worry about unintentional abuse with most girls, so you should chose the breed more on personality traits than anything else. Does she (you) want a dog that is needy and will always want to be with her, or more independant yet still playfull? Or what type of energy level? Is there any qualities you specifically don't want or really do want other than being small? That's a tough question with almost no information...

You know exactly what to expect from another toy poodle, that may be a good way to go. Otherwise do some research and find exactly the behaviorism and personality that you think would best match you and your daughter.

This is a list I just found of breeds not good with children
Afghan hound, basenji, borzoi, Brussels griffon, English bull terrier, Chihuhua, dachshund, English toy spaniel, French bulldog, German shorthaired pointer, German wirehaired pointer, giant schnauzer, Italian greyhound, komondor, kuvasz, Lhasa apso, Maltese, Manchester terrier, Man-chester toy terrier, miniature pinscher, Pekingese, Pomeranian, puli, Rhodesian ridgeback, schipperke, Scottish terrier, Sealyham terrier, Shiba inu, Skye terrier, Tibetan terrier, toy poodle, whippet, wirehaired pointing griffon, and Yorkshire terrier.

Toy dogs aren't the best for kids. However, if you MUST get a toy, I would suggest a terrier of some sort. They are less likely to snap at your eight year old than other dogs, like poodles and chihuahuas, are. If you absolutely detest terriers, my second recommendation is a miniature doxen (aka doxie). They tend toward back problems and may bark, but they can tolerate more than many other toy breeds.

Hope this helps!

I was going to say that I bought a toy poodle when my daughter was 4 years old. And I was going to tell you how great he was with her then and still is now (he's 7yo now). But I see that you already know how wonderful they are!! Why not get another one?

I have Miniature Schnauzers since my girls were very little and they have been wonderful with them all along (dogs with the girls). Even when the girls were very playful with them.
