Our daughter is about to turn 9 and has been doing chores for a couple years now. I cheer you for wanting to teach him some responsibility.
Easy chores:
taking the garbage out
bringing the empty garbage can off the curb
fill or empty the dishwasher
feed the pets
clean their room
clean the bathroom (basics: wash counter, clean sink, sweep floor, replace towels)
help wash the car
help vacuum or sweep
Good basic chores are good for kids. Our daughter has a set schedule that we keep posted. She never complains, in fact, she brags to her friends that she "earns" her stuff. Whatever you do, stick with it and don't give up. It's worth it to you and your son.
Good luck!!

My stepson has been doing chores since he was 4. Not major chores, but helping me do things. He cleans the rabbit litter box, mkes his bed every morning, always has a clean room, sorts his laundry, and helps set and clear the table. He loves doing it so its not like i have to pull teeth. he started making his bed on his own when he was 4. He likes to dust. i got him a feather duster and he dusts. I usually have to re-dust, but the point is hes doing it. I would not give him a whole lot at first due to he may not like to do things.

Let him work WITH you and his Dad a lot. Make him feel important and he'll grow to like doing chores and appreciating a tidy house, a shiny car and a newly mowed lawn :)
For an 8 yr old, appropriate personal chores IMO are making his bed, cleaning his own room (with some help), putting dirty clothes in the laundry, taking out the garbage, helping out w house & car maintenance (or feel like he's helping out :) ) and take his part in caring for family pets, like taking doggie for a walk or feed the fish. Don't overdo it for starters. Some kids respond very well to getting a basic allowance and then *earn* the rest by doing chores.

My son is 7 and I make him do a few chores. He cleans out our cat's liter box, keeps his room clean, unload the dishwasher. Why not let him do some of the work I figure. He likes doing it....

--help gather up trash on trash day....
he may not be able to handle the big trash can in the kitchen, but he can get trash from the bedrooms and bathrooms!
--set the table
--pick-up toys
--dust...maybe not everywhere, but he can take a swiffer duster over the TV and certain parts of the house....
--help clean up dishes....he can at least take them to the sink.
--help with yard work...like water plants or rake leaves in the fall.
many of these things he can do with you, so you can make it a team effort, plus, he'll know it's time to do his chores when you start your part of it!
take care!

I have a 7yr old. He's about 4'3.. tall enough to load the dishwasher but not tall enough to unload it and put the dishes away- so he just loads it. He is responsible for keeping his room clean which includes making his bed, putting away his toys, and ensuring his dirty clothes are in his hamper. He also sweeps/vacuums the floors in his bedroom and his bathroom.

my 8 yr old has a few: setting the table, helping to clear the table, taking his laundry to the laundry basket, tidying his room, feeding the dog, initiating his homework instead of being told to do it. Good luck!
