mistress is actually the full word for miss as in Mr Mrs Miss, Mr is short for mister or master Mrs the masters wife who can also be called madam or mistress its old fashioned English as is school master and school mistress which is why the school principle is head master/mistress the bit on the side meaning probably just came from it meaning unmarried since married ladies wernt expected to put it about.
