You need to send them a debt validation letter. Send it certified mail return receipt (paper trail)

The statute of limitations (SOL) for collecting a debt in Texas is 4 years. Texas is a last action state, so the 4 year SOL begins to run from the last time you either made a charge or a payment on the account.

If you are out of SOL on the account, you are not legally bound to pay the debt. You are within your rights to send them a SOL letter (which basically says that the debt is past the legal time limit for collection and to go away.)

Check out the site that I've added, do some reading in the newbie forum and then in the credit forum.

Learn your rights.

You will be able to find what you need to deal with them on that site. Everything on that site is free to read and use.

Yes, they can harass you. Find out what the bill is and discuss with the original company. Create a payment plan with them, and tell the company to notify the collection agent that you are paying the bill.
