My boyfriend and I have worked in resturaunts for years. We, and I'm sure every other waitor out there would like and explination... Why do black people think they are exempt from tiping...If they are acting like civilized human beings they always recieve the exact same service as everyone else. I know when they are talking ebonics and acting like your owe them something they are going to get bad service..
i wish they would realize this....
but either way...no matter how good the service...you are going to get a crappy tip...if you get one at all....There are about 1% of black people that try to make up for the embarassment that the others cause, act polite, and tip really well...which we really appreciate, and most of the time they will get even better service, especially if it is not their 1st time here...I was just wondering if anyone would like to give their 2 cents...and a reasonable explination for this?...black waitors dont like waiting on black people either...just ask one..

oh...and they almost ALWAYS have money on them...a lot dont trust banks so thats why they always have so much money on them....they will take all their dollar change and like you the coins...and they wonder why somone would spit in their food....waitors have to pay money out of their pocket if the peron does not tip...its usually about 3% of the total bill...tip or not...so if you leave $3 on $100 bill...the waitor makes nothing...if you cant afford 15% than dont eat in a resturaunt

I hate to say this, but I did work in food service since I was sixteen and while putting myself through college, so about 6 years total...I worked in an ethnically diverse area and I didn't believe it when my manager told me that black people were crappy customers. Until I had decided to keep a log of all complaints and "validity". Over 90% of our complaints came from blacks who would say they didn't get an item, got a wrong item, or the special order was wrong. Problem was, we had an order check system where 3 people checked the order before it went out. I am willing to swear that out of all the complaints, maybe 2 orders out of 50 were missing items. As for getting wrong items, it always seemed strange to me that they could never produce the incorrect item. Or even better on special orders, over half the item would be eaten before the person noticed the problem, and now I am supposed to replace the whole thing?!? I don't believe I am a racist, but I have objectivly observed the attitudes of many black folk, and that is that they feel they are owed something. Sure slavery was evil, but my family didn't come to America until the early 40's due to WWII. And even then, we were poor fisherman and couldn't ever afford to own a slave. So how do I owe anyone anything?

First off, tipping is a totaly insane practice. Why would I tip the person who simply carries my food to my table when the preparation is so much more important? How much the restaurant pays you is simply not my concern, no matter how insensitive that sounds, it's a simple fact that I can't walk around conpensating everyone who is underpaid. Why is the tip based on the price of the meal? Is it harder to carry a steak than to carry eggs? That being said, I'm a very generous tipper and even tip poor service.

As to the question, I think you might have gotten yourself into a bit of a vicious circle. When a black person sits down at one of your tables, you probably expect him or her to be a lousy tipper so you start out with an attitude problem. Do you provide service to them based on the amount of tip you expect to receive or because you take pride in the job you do? Maybe if you stopped worrying about the tip and just gave the best possible service all the time, the tips would possibly increase. You might be the problem, not your customers.

I don't think there was anything rude or discriminating about what you asked. I have a sister-in-law who has waitressed in many bars and restaurants. She and her co-workers (regardless of age, sex or race) all agree that african americans ON A GENERAL do not tip well. That's not to say that everyone else tips well either. There are plenty of dead beats in all race, age and sex categories.

We can only speculate as to why they behave this way. Perhaps it's ignorance of etiquette. Perhaps it's a lack of math skills. Perhaps it's a chip on their shoulder. Who knows.

I personally tip 15-20%. If I can't afford the meal and tip then I plan eating somewhere else. Just as I need to spend money for gas to get to the restaurant, I also need to have enough to tip accordingly.

If the service is mediocre I tip less of course.

Honestly sweetie, I think its a generational thing. I lived in the staes in the 80's, tipping was mandatory, I come from england were we even tip our hairdressers (and the girl that washed our hair in my generation) and the taxi drivers. Now ive lived in australia for years, were tipping is a word that doesnt exist, but wen I went home last time i noticed that people were shocked wen i tipped!!! i thought id get my head kicked in if i didnt?
Its seems to be out of fashion which is lousey for young people who work their asses off in low paying jobs relying on tips.
Thats why we get mediocre service in resturants etc and quite rightly so!

Fortunately, I've never had to wait table, but I have heard this complaint before about black people being poor tippers. Honestly, I don't know. I wouldn't think it's a racial thing, because I have black friends who wait table, and like you said, they aren't tipped well by black customers either.

I really don't know. I'm sure not ALL black people tip poorly, but it's the ones who do who give a bad name to all the good tipping black folks.

I am black and I tip no matter what or how I am treated. There have been times a white waitor treated me and my, husband so bad we ask for the manager to come to our table. I explain what happen and the manger would try to make things right. I loved that because they don't have to. so please stop trying to blame black people all the time.

I thought it was a stereotype until a friend of mine worked at a restaurant in downtown Houston where a lot of black people went (the owner was black), and he told me that they indeed don't tip or tip very little. In an 8 hr day, my friend made $5.00 in tips from black people, and he was waiting on about 7 tables.

I used to waitress and never had this problem. Most people I know tip rather well and if they don't, or if I don't, it's because your service wasn't up to par. I'm going to also second the opinion of the person who mentioned waiting on teenagers as well as second the opinion of the person who said that if your posting this "question" then it's probably pretty obvious that you notice a difference in people's skin color. Grow up.

Those are terrible things to say.

I'm not black and I don't tip either unless there's exceptional service. Of course you're going to think that it was good because it's you. What you think is good might actually be horrible, which is what I usually see. Waiters usually wait too long to take an order and sometimes, it takes food forever to get here. Sometimes, I get the appetizer AFTER the meal.

Why do you persist in stereotyping? I don't know where any of you work or live, but I tip. I tip generously. In return I get excellent service. So don't presume that someone is black will not tip. Some wait staff members have given me lousy service and missed out of 20% + tips.
