Ask area churches, people donate cars and vans to churches, and word of mouth helps. I spread the word around when I needed a washing machine and was offered several.

Find a local non-profit organization that sells cars. You will be able to get agood price and they wont jerk you around like they would at a dealership.

try calling/paying a visit to an organization such as volunteers of america. they usually have cars that are donated that they to minor repairs on and then sell for a lower price so people who are, for example, in a situation like yours, can afford a mode of transportation.

get a sugar daddy like i did. no im just playing. here in wisconsin we have organizations that will give single working moms a loan or resources to find a vehicle. check with a local non-profit organization to see if they can help you with that.
