Here's what you can take with you:
2-3 heavy sweaters
2-3 pairs of jeans (or cargo khakis)
2-3 pairs of shoes (if possible maybe some boots)
it's a good idea to think about a shall
a heavy coat
gloves if you can
thermal underwear: there are two, tops and bottoms. You should get both, you can find them both for no more than about $15-$16 at Wal Mart, K Mart, or Target. They go under your pants (and your shirt or sweater) to keep you warm, and they do work very well. It sounds like you're going to be doing some outdoors, you will definitely need this.
Also take sunglasses with you.
Feminine hygiene stuff.
Contact solution and case (if applicable)
A wool beanie to cover your head and ears
I think that's about all you need.
Oh and don't forget a camera!
Have fun :)

Actually, it is unlikely to be that cold during your trip. In that area of Michigan, during the month of September, the average high is 73 and the average low is 50 (in the middle of the night).

Your name says you won't need to take a coat. I would say underwear only?
