I think you are talking about the Rank of "General of the Armies". It ranks above and US 5 star general the only people in history to hold the title General of the Armies were John J. Pershing and, posthumously, George Washington.
This came about because Pershing was still alive when they had all those 5-stars in WWII and since he was the senior military figure in the US, the war department considered him Superior in rank.
And Washington, was made by act of Congress the highest ranking military officer ever. There can never be anyone that outranks Washington. Like it should be.

In the United States Army military hierarchy, General of the Armies is traditionally considered a rank superior to a five-star general, also known as "General of the Army" (note the difference between the names of the two ranks). It is sometimes considered a six-star rank, though no insignia was ever authorized. The full title of the military rank is "General of the Armies of the United States", although the rank is commonly referred to simply as "General of the Armies". The only people in history to hold the title General of the Armies were John J. Pershing and, posthumously, George Washington.

There is NO SUCH THING as a six star general or admiral in the armed or uniformed service of the United States of America! Nor have there EVER been! The highest commissioned rank in the armed forces wears 5 stars, and is only appointed to such rank during war time. During peace time, 4 stars is the highest anyone can go. The ranks of the Army and Navy are as follows:
5 stars (Army)-General of the Army (the last Army general to wear this rank was Omar N. Bradley). A fifth star was offered to Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell following the Gulf War in 1990-1991, but both refused the honor and retired.
5 stars (Navy) - Fleet Admiral (the last Navy Admiral to wear 5 stars was Chester W. Nimitz). A fifth star was offered to Admiral Wm. Crowe as an incentive to keep him from retiring as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Reagan Administration, but he refused and retired.
Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with the 5 star rank in the Air Force.
The United States Marine Corps HAS NO 5 star ranking. 4 Stars is as hih as it goes in the Marine Corps until such time as they are severed from the Department of the Navy. As it stands right now (Marines, please don't take offense to this), the Commandant of the Marine Corps (a four star marine Corps General) is positionally junior to the Chief of Naval Operations (a four star navy Admiral).

Washington and Pershing - although they never actually wore 6 stars - there is no such thing.
They were known as "General of the Armies of the United States."

No such thing, anyone telling you there is is misinformed to say the least, Five Stars was the highest and is currently an honorary rank, General Omar Bradley was the last to achieve that rank.

properly, I knew about Boxing, lettuce and strawberries, rhubarb and asparagus. Asparagus takes 50 years to take root. Rhubarb is way swifter. i purchased my mum and dad asparagus seedlings and became fairly disillusioned at the same time as ma study the field, thankfully, we've a plot of land and the aspragus grows precise on the part. a great number of rhubarb is in the outdoor. The pears had me baffled. i assumed per chance they lit a tournament, positioned it in the glass, and at the same time as the tournament extinguished, the version in air rigidity sucks it in the bottle.
