The self defense laws in most countries only allow you to retalliate if you have already had an aggressor try to physically harm you. Suppose, like in fuedal Japan and Europe you were allowed to post and accept challenges from someone who had insulted and/or dishonoured you. (It wouldn't necessarily have to be to the death as long as there was a clear winner). That it developed independently in such different cultures would seem to show there was/is a need for it? Suppose instead of rampant gang wars, each gang nominated a contendor to represent them in a duel instead. How many lives could this save?

How many lives could this save? None, Because the problems would still be there, After gangster A was killed by gangster B, gangster C would want revenge. It would just legalize, somewhat the way things are done today.

And by bringing it back you would have people fighting over stupid stuff, yes it would happen.

And regardless, if you kill someone it is considered murder, even in self defense. The difference is IF the other person escalated the situation to deadly force first or not. And if one got killed in a duel, would it depend on WHO issued the duel, or WHO insulted WHO to begin with? This would be hard to define.

The way it is now is that if I were to shoot you for calling me a name, I am guilty of murder. But if you were to come at me with a baseball bat, while calling me a name, and I shoot you, I am justified in doing it, since you attacked me first with the deadly weapon. No court case against me I would be free to go. But then there is always civil court. Your relatives would sue me for killing you. And would probably win. And how would the possibility of a duel fit into this whole legal gamut of what can happen, and what does happen?

What needs to happen is the current justice system needs to be revamped to give the rights back to the victims and take them away from the criminals. This change would be easier to get implemented than bringing back dueling.

I think it would be entertaining to say the least. Often at work some overweight executive is disrespectful to me on a weekly basis, how I would love to pummel him. If it was a fair challenge I guess I could karmatically accept it. On this this thought alone I wish it was brought back.

But it would not change anything. people would still kill, people would still sue, people would still fight unfairly...
People will always be people. And people will always prove they cannot be trusted. You can take that to the bank.

That would be a great way to do things, and its how it used to be done, but most people wouldn't want to do that because then either they would have to stop insulting the other people, or they might be one of the people dueling.

Sounds lots greater desirable than the gangland violence that is going on top now! If the two events had weapons and neither of them had their backs became, this may well be lots greater honest than the present gadget.

i'm for it. but it should be done with sabers or with some sharp weapon. a good old fashion knife fight would be ideal. hand to hand combat is just too vulgar. you can see that on ufc and pride.
