Yes he had a choice. He rejected his first wife Lilith. She was the first woman, not Eve. Lilith was rebellious and refused to do what Adam said. She was involved in witchcraft and other things . Adam told God he could not abide this woman any longer so God had Lilith ran out of Eden and replaced her with Eve.

Adam asked god to make for him the perfect companion. One who was beautiful and kind, intellegent and loving. A woman who would complement him and make him whole.

God replied "I can make such a woman for you, but it will cost you an arm and a leg"

Adam thought for a moment and then responded: "What can I get for just a rib?"
