Yes he had a choice. He rejected his first wife Lilith. She was the first woman, not Eve. Lilith was rebellious and refused to do what Adam said. She was involved in witchcraft and other things . Adam told God he could not abide this woman any longer so God had Lilith ran out of Eden and replaced her with Eve.

God replied "I can make such a woman for you, but it will cost you an arm and a leg"
