You can use any semi-sweet or sweet red wine, but it will taste different. Marsala wine has it's own distinct taste.

Use a couple tablespoons of grape jelly. I know it sounds weird, but some of the famous restaurants use this instead of wine and sugar.

Madeira is a good substitute. But any sweet red will do.
