The way I got my parents to get rid of my horrid gap between my two front teeth (and start my obsession with oral health) is to make my own appointment, and drag them along with me!! Tell them you want to take them out to dinner, and drive them to the ortho office. Is your dad worried about the financials of paying for braces? If you don't have insurance, try your local dental school for treatment, it's much cheaper than private offices...It is possiable that your dads teeth were crooked when he was younger and his jaw grew to adapt to the teeth, during his growth and development. Which if he "bloomed" late, meaning had his last growth spurt older than what you are now (18) through genetics you proably will have a late growth spurt where everything will settle into the right space. Orthodontists have many technologies to see the growth of your facial bones, to tell you wether you have gone through your last growth spurt or if you have yet to go through it, he wont scam you! He will tell you his professional opinion, which is regulated by the state...Just have a consult done, it won't cost anything, unless you take the next step which is treatment

Usually Orthodontists will give a free consultation. Just take a look & let you know what they can do & how much it will cost. In my case, all of my molars are in the right place...but the front teeth are crooked. My dentist and orthodontist tell me that it is becase of my bite and the fact that I clench & grind in my sleep that I am growing bone spurs on my jaw. They both said that after braces when my bite is corrected the problem will dramatically reduce. Of course I dont know if you have the same problem, but your bite does affect your over-all dental health. PLUS...if you are embarrassed, it is a confidence issue also. If you are happy with your smile (possibly your most important feature) then you are more confident and will go further in life. When you are happy with your smile you smile more. I believe smiling CAUSES you and the people around you to be happier.
I dont know your families situation...but money might be an issue.
If he doesn't agree...you will just need to do what im doing. At 28 years old I am paying cash for my braces. I know it is something that will make a positive impact on my self-image and it is something I have wanted most of my life but wasn't able to have.
I consider it a great investment.

Your dad is lying to you about your jaw expanding. Teeth do not magically straighten themselves. If that were true, I wouldn't have a slipped incisor. Bad teeth only get worse without treatment and prevention. When was the last time you went to the dentist? Was your dad with you?
If it helps any, my boyfriend has a similar problem with his front teeth, but I don't mind. I love him and his smile, regardless of his front teeth being crooked. Everyone has quirks that they don't like about themselves, but it makes him feel better to know that his teeth aren't what I focus on, it's him as a person.

He is full of crap about the jaw expanding and curing that problem. Crooked teeth get worse over time.
Tell him you want to get a dentist's opinion. Even the cheapest of dads would go along with that idea.
Now that you are 18 and able to get a decent-paying job one possibility is to pay for your own dental work.

surely if u needed a brace ur dentist would have already reccomended one? ask him to take u to a dentists for an opinion. if he says u need one then ur dad will therefore prob have no choice because he will want whats best for u, some people do have natural teeth like that tho - just the way they grow. maybe they cant be fixed by a brace - i dont know cas im not a dentist but id suggest a trip there

I am not a dentist but I know from my experience that your teeth problem will not get solved with the expansion of your jaws.
However, the jaws expand till the age of 35 or so but how much ?...that depends from person to person. This is again as per my personal observation.

Well I'm not entirely sure because my parents want to get me braces for my bottom teeth which I want too! Wait, here's something try making up excuses for your father like 'I don't care what people think, it's what I think that matters' or if it's something like a money issue trying telling him to save money or you could save money for a couple weeks too, to help him, out! Not entirely sure that those would work but just give it a shot and tell him that you can't wait until it gets straightened on his own that you need to just get the braces over with while your young!?
