First off, you'll do better if you understand the lingo.

If you want to use a FPGA, then I assume you have a hardware design in mind.

HDL is NOT programming. HDL is Hardware Design (or Describe) Language.

You are designing hardware not writing a program. Sure it might sound like semantics at first, but if you want to be good at you need to understand this.

Your real choices are Verilog or VHDL.
Verilog is the better of the two. However VHDL can seem more "program-ish" because it allows you to do things that can not synthesize to a hardware.

ISE is not a HDL. That is the software you use to convert your HDL to a design which goes on the FPGA.

There are google groups on both VHDL and Verilog to help you get started.

He probably attempting to assert which you in basic terms might desire to income expertise of programming concepts and robust judgment, instead than languages. This quite is maximum remarkable, too. For representation, being able to hold a communication in 15 human languages would not advise which you will possibly be able to jot down an striking paintings of literature in any of them; and a quite good written software is quite resembling a quite nicely written instruction manual, in that it desires to have many components that for the period of advantageous condition at the same time in non-obtrusive although astonishing approaches.

Are you talking about programming tools or programming language.

It's doesn't matter. The most lean coding is the verilog but it can become spaghettic code. VHDL is very structural but lengthy.
