I had been seeing a man for a while now almost every weekend, so when I expressed that I wanted us to be exclusive, he has backed away instead. Why is this? Is there anything I can do about it now? Thank so much for your help - because it's difficult...

Have you tried talking to him since you seen a change? Either you have scared him off or he likes things the way they are. He may want to continue to date multiple women. You have voiced your wants, you can wait to see if he eventually responds to you or you can take he action as he does not want the same thing as you do. It takes both parties to make a relationship work. Right now you two are going opposite directions as opposed to coming together.

Yes, it's very difficult. Not much you can do about it except apologize. Why did he back away? Because he's not ready for exclusivity. It apparently often happens that two people don't communicate very well in these situations. It leads to mis-understandings and errors as it did here. Sensitive communications are very important so that neither gets surprised (not to mention disappointed).

Been there done that. He's not ready. In my case everything worked out. He honestly had some internal demons to sort out before he could be with someone fully, so maybe he just needs time. But be careful you could just be filling a physical void until the real thing somes along.

Unless both parties agree to being exclusive you won't be able to make that work. Why would you want to be exclusive with someone who doesn't want to be exclusive with you?
