You mean Masonite?

What are you putting on the paper or Masonite? You didn't explain. Are you using watercolor, charcoal, paint?

Seriously, if you are a serious artist who wants his/her creations to last a lifetime I wouldn't use either. I would use canvas or, if you are on a budget, canvas-board. Canvas-board is just as cheap as Masonite and is real canvas.

Personally, I love painting acrylics on rag paper - the only problem with it is, if you don't use a couple of coats of good varnish, and if you don't fasten/adhere it to a solid substrate, it must be framed behind glass. The substrate problem can be solved by stretching the paper onto stretcher bars intended for canvas, or using an archival waterproof glue to adhere it to museum board or another such substrate.

As for masonite, there are two types - the cheap one is "treated" - meaning filled with waterproofing chemicals (oils) and you DO NOT want to use that. The non-treated is fine, and the lumberyard will cut it to size for you. You still have to seal it (rabbit-skin glue or acrylic sealer such as Golden GAC 100) then use 2 or 3 coats of gesso, sanding between layers if you want that ultra-smooth surface.

In my opinion - the amount of work involved in preparing masonite panels is much greater than with paper, and you get a different effect because the gesso doesn't absorb inks and watered-down paint the same as paper, and doesn't impart the same "glow".

As for cost, when all the preparation and/or finishing is done, the cost is about the same if you use rag watercolour paper.

Afterthought - if you're using Canvas Paper, stop it! You may as well go to pre-gessoed canvas panels like Dr Watson suggested - the minor cost increase (about $1.00 more for 9X12") will be worth the improvement! That stuff is awful...
