Mental health is a significant part of society about 1 in 4 people can be affected by it at some point in their life. Mental health was once viewed as something really dangerous and many people (including women who had become pregnant out of wedlock) were institutionalised. However, changes in the 20th Century have helped to ensure that people with mental health issues are not as stigmatised and there is more promotion of them being supported living in the community.

mental health issues can arise following a trigger within the person - ie someone dying can trigger it or living with so much stress that the person just breaks down. I don't see how u can promote 'good' mental health, rather I think its about acknowledging problems or feelings within yourself and visiting the GP to address them. Unfortunately not everyone has access to the same drugs, research has shown that black people are prescribed the older anti-psychotic drugs which can have more severe side effects than the newer ones.

Raising mental health awareness is important because some people still believe that a person with a mental health problem is a 'looney' or a 'nutter' and with that mindset more people with mental health issues will be isolated within the community. furthermore, the media appears to stereotype people with mental health issues as either 'mad' or 'bad' and this is very detrimental to the person and also their families.

Young people should be given more information on mental health as a lot of them act as young carers for parents who experience mental health. Some areas have a young carers group which young people can access but these are not established nationwide.

I used to avoid people who I thought might have a mental health problem, this was due to my ignorance on the subject.
Having gone more into it,I now realise that not everyone with a mental health problem is likely to attack me.
I have a son who, after l5 years of numerous problems, appears to have Bipolar or at least Manic Depression in the extreme. We put his behaviour down to his use of drugs and alcohol.I so need to convince him , that this is the reason why ,although clean for two years he is so terribly depressed ,in fact suicidal.
I am trusting now that I can find the right help for him,if we loose him, because we didn't realise what the problem was,I will never forgive my self, and probably die of a broken heart myself. There must be so many in this world you live every day in this hell,we must improve the help available for them and make it more easily available.
