(I have been thinking a lot about religion lately. Specifically, how interesting it is that there are so many religions in the world. Obviously many people believe there is a higher power, but the different forms are interesting to me. )
My question is, how can people claim to be christians without reading the bible. My husband was very insistant on getting our son baptized, however asked me sarcastically what I was doing when I was reading the bible. Why is there such a stigma on reading the bible? Isn't that what teaches up what Christianity is all about? What are your thoughts?

I think I am still looking for answers as far as religion goes, I just feel it is important to read the "manual". Sometimes I think that the bible is just a story, but I agree with the principals. Does anyone else think that too?

""how can people claim to be Christians without reading the bible.""
I really don't see how that is possible either!
I do believe that,in this case, the poor guy is AFRAID to read The Bible because he expects he won't understand it.

The Bible. It's used to help some and hurt others - it all depends on whose using it and for what. Some read it for inspiration and some use it to make money. Some can't even think with-out it and some think its all bunk. You can take anything to far including the Bible. If you read it and it helps you...then that's great. If you read it and start lashing out at others in its name...then that sucks. I believe the Bible to be divine wisdom; however I believe there are other books that are divine wisdom as well. I also understand that the Bible was written by men a very long time ago and their perception of what God is may be skewed. Their environment and understanding of things was very different from today, so when I read the Bible I keep that in mind.
You may want to check out the spiritual section at your local bookstore. Read different books and then make a decision based on what fulfills you. There are many different paths to God…so take your time and find the one that fits you best.

The fact that you read the Bible is very commendable and good. Many people believe that the Bible is nonsense, or just the word of man and not God. They are skeptical and cynical. Many others are afraid because they know if they read it and understand it they will be held accountable for their actions. Christianity is all about following in Christ's footsteps, and he knew the value of God's word when warding off Satan's temptations. Three times he quoted from the Bible to show that what Satan was doing was wrong and against God's will. So if Jesus knew it and used it, then as Christians, his followers, shouldn't we all be doing the same? Good point.

Religions are man made and are not of God. Religions can not agree regarding the Scripture and are as the Pharisees and are about control of the people. Many people are religious but they are not in Christ. To many there is not a stigma on reading the Bible, it is just those that are religious have no interest in getting to know God or the things of Jesus. The Bible feeds the one in Christ and is meat to help one in Christ grow, mature and become strong in the Word and in Christ. God gave us His Word, the Scriptures so that we might get to know the Character of God in the Old Testament and about Jesus and the New Covenant made between Jesus and the Father in the New Testament.

I would question whether your husband is truly a Christian or just calls himself one.
Many people will say they are such and such denomination just because their family members are or because that's what they were told growing up even though not one single person attends a church of that denomination.
Example: I was told that we were Lutheran. Not that one single person in my family attended a Lutheran church, but somewhere along the lines of family history someone obviously was a true Lurtheran and everyone kinda kept repeating that.
I personally am not Lutheran and never will be.
There is not anything wrong with reading the bible, and the next time your husband asks you what you are doing I would tell him, "just doing what you are supposed to be doing honey"....

Yes!! Read the Bible!!...
How many times have you been listening to someone speak in Church when an idea to answer your prayers comes to mind.. that is TOTALLY unrelated to what is being talked about?...
Reading the Bible builds up your Spirituality so that you can hear the Holy Spirit talk to you, just like listening to someone in Church speak of spiritual things...
You can be reading the Bible and get a totally different meaning one time than you got previously depending upon what guidance you need in your life at the time.. or what help you need...
And, it will also give you stories to teach your children.

I guess people can claim to be anything... but the Bible is the instruction book for our lives, so we should study it. Some believe that if one is baptized that they will go to Heaven, but that isn't really what the Bible says. Read Romans Chapter 10, Vs 9,10. See also John 3:16.

Some people like a person who grew up catholic and now won't even discuss anything, is more common than you think.
The bible is incomplete, edited by a catholic Pope, and who has alot of power in religions, catholic churches, but some lead with by putting fear inot people.
Fact- there is no satan, no guilt, no fear,
God is all Love, and we are here to experience for him.
Gnostic- Seeker of Knowledge, you can be any religion, and just want to know more about the truth. Some are not interested in the Truth only controlling, and not losing their power.
Its our life and we give power to who we want, so give it to yourself and seek the truth.
Check out Gnostic.

Your reasoning is right on!
People calling themselves 'Christian' often ignore, even put down, the Bible.
Why?
One reason is the Bible exhorts a conduct that many people do not wish to accept.
Still, these people believe it important to be thought of as Christian.
So, keep the name, forget the manuel.
A second reason is so many clergymen have shown themselves hypocritical and the average person wishes to distance themselves from such ones.
They assume the Bible is part of the clergy, so they distance themselves from it as well.
