Basic table manners, I suppose.
Use a fork and knife. Make sure peices are bite-size, and don't load your fork with more than you can shovel into your mouth at one time.
Use your napkin for any renegade salad dressing.

I think what you are asking is, "Is it permitted to cut a salad with a fork and/or knife?" The answer is yes, although this was frowned upon in the past.
Certainly it is more appealing to watch someone cut their salad, using either the side of their fork, or their fork and knife, instead of trying to stuff immense greens pieces into their mouth.
A good example of this is a true Caesar Salad - which should contain the entire romaine lettuce leaves. No human I have ever seen can fit an entire one of these in their mouth neatly.
So cut away and be neat/dainty. Good luck!

Well, dont' stab the salad, for one. You don't want to splatter the dressing all over. Then when you pinch them with the fork so it slowly and firmly, and don't take it to your mouth so fast, that sometimes dislodges a veggie from another and you could fling it at someone. Make sure you put the whole amount on the fork in your mouth.
The point basically is to eat is slowly and to make sure you can fit it in your mouth (not too full).

That is an oxy moron isn't it? I try to cut my salad in the smallest pieces possible, so I do not look like a fool trying to stick a piece of lettuce in my mouth that is as big as the plate.
If the salad is one of many courses then I do not finish it. If it is the main course that is different.

I usually cut my salad with a knife prior to eating. Some of the lettuce leafs are large and it is easier in smaller pieces.

Use a knife and fork. Cut up the pieces small enough that your mouth isn't full of salad and it's not difficult to chew.
What are you concerned about?

While others have answered this better than I, use that knife! I'm not ashamed to do it, even though my wife has given me weird looks about it. Better to look civilized than to open your maw as wide as possible to accomodate the huge pieces of lettuce some restaurants think they can accurately called Salad.

Use your knife and fork to cut the vegetables down to smaller sizes if they are too big.
Have your napkin on your lap.

Put it in a Pita bread. I do that a lot when I am on the go, and it keeps it neat. Tastes good too.
