... without getting into too many details, I did some work for someone that everyone else thought was great, and he did too, at first. But the next project and the next after that the guy kept making huge changes and dragged his feet and deadlines came and went. He didn't pay the bill for the 2nd project and we think that's why he kept putting off allowing the 3rd one to be finished (because we told him we weren't giving him the 3rd finished item until number 2 was paid for). He has since cancelled the project and now he's going around accusing ME of being the problem, calling me lazy (even though I came in at night and on weekends, spending nearly double the amount of time on his project that a similar one would've taken from a more experienced client), saying my work was subpar (he has used quotes from a celebrity to show people how good my work was), I even worked some hours off the clock just so my boss wouldn't be too upset at the huge amount of time his projects were going over.

It's eating me up inside. I know the truth, and thankfully my boss and coworkers know the truth, but it's still keeping me up at night with anger.

ALWAYS! relax. you did nothing wrong. your boss knows, and your coworkers know what a wonderful worker you really are.

Annie R. is right. Document everything. This man is out to get blood.

Do you have letters of reference? Can you get them? Carry them with you. If you ever have to impress a new client, you can say that the experience with this bad egg was an unfortunate learning experience. You can put in a remark about how they never paid for anything and then tried to blame it all on you. Don't spend a lot of time bashing him though! Just say that unfortunately you can't get something for nothing. Then you can say how the majority of your clients say great things about you, show them the letters and move on.

Can your company take him to court?

If this person is as bad as you say, then he has probably stepped on other toes in the past. His credibility is probably on the line and people will probably not believe all he says. Hold your self to a high standand and act with decorum and no one will believe that you could be capable of the lies he spews out.

You had to learn a lesson the hard way. Try and be more selective with your clients.

This will not be the first time you will have to deal with a person like this. I document everything and I save every piece of correspondence. It has saved my butt so many times. Hold your head high, I think others know the difficulties you were dealing with.
