Yes...If you want more info ask and I'll look back...
EDIT: They all look nice and innocent but they dont even know most of their own background...they aren't allowed to read it..The first sign of a cult... They all have the same background...therefore they are all messed upAlso they believe in some out there stuff..yeah they can leave whenever they want...only to get shunned by their loved ones because the "church " says to stop contact. Also lets examine their practices...most of the cerimonies and such are actually derived from the free masons. Most of them resmble cult activity.
EDIT: Actually if they read their background carefully they fit the criteria of a cult

To summarize, cult is a subjective word meaning, to the particular person using it, "a religion I don't like." When someone refers to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a "cult," that simply tells us that the speaker doesn't like the Church. Christianity itself was once a new religion with dynamic leadership, strong in-group bonding, high moral expectations, and additional scriptures, all of which greatly offended the mainline religions of its day. Its leaders were not professionally trained clergy, but they did attempt to convert the world to a truth no one else had. By most of the objective definitions that have been proposed for the term cult, early Christianity was one. And so far any general definition of a cult that would fit the Latter-day Saints will also fit New Testament Christianity. But that's not bad company to be in.

"It is helpful to know what a cult is. One common trait of cults is that members are not free to leave once they become members.
Another common--though not-across-the-board--trait is that members are to give everything they own to the leader(s).
Another common trait is that members are not allowed to associate with whom they choose, and sometimes MUST cut off all contact with former friends and family.
And yet another is that members must submit to the will of the leader(s) or else be punished.
A cult "steals" choices from people.
The Shriners are not a cult. They are a society.
People throw the word "cult" around, and they have no idea what they're talking about. A tiny bit of research would reveal these people's use of the word "cult" to describe certain religions and societies to be erroneous. "
This is a response I got from Sandy when I asked about if Cults were bad or not...good answer. Under this definition, no The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is not a cult.
I happen to be a member of that church, and I can tell you, they put a high emphasis on questioning your beliefs in oder to gain your own personal conviction before you go along with anything. Now if your brother has gained this personal conviction, then it wouldn't be surprising that he has made some changes in his life and outlook, but that wouldn't have been through "brainwashing" it would have been through his own choice. If you're genuinly concerned about it, you should talk to him, ask him what his motivations are, he can probably explain it better than anyone on this board.
best wishes.

On distinct events I easily have talked with a range of of human beings from a range of of religions, and between those which will oftentimes declare that individuals of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are cults, I easily have considered a marginally exciting trend. in case you ask them what's a Christian, their answer is "someone who believes in Jesus Christ." it would want to decision in the precise wording yet will often be that sort of an uncomplicated answer. even with the undeniable fact that in case you ask those self same human beings about why Latter-day Saints are literally not Christian then that straightforward 6 be conscious answer can many times change into an hour lengthy debate or talk. So provided that trend that I easily have considered over the approach 12 years the superb answer i visit offer for the rationalization being to easily reference Matthew 7:3-5 as a proof to what's taking position.

Nope.
A person in the LDS church can leave whenever they want. They are left with the free will to read whatever they like, watch whatever they like, and do whatever they want - the church might councel against certain things, but they won't physically stop you doing anything.
Did you ever think that they were just involved in what they were hearing, or perhaps that they actually liked it? The LDS church doesn't force anyone to do anything - everything is optional, it's not a cult.

The wide definition of a cult is any system of religious worship or a ritual. We all could be considered members of a cult, yes all even the God haters here because it also means a group of people who share an esoteric, or intellectual interest. The
more exacting definition is obsessive devotion to a person, principle, or ideal. To most christian group it is again narrowed to mean those religious organizations that have strong central control (like the First Presidency of the Mormon Church), and have extra-biblical revelation (like the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price). There are a lot of doctrines that the Church holds that are not just outside of standard christian doctrine but that are out and out
anti-biblical. For example the belief that they can become like God.
Isaiah 43:10
Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
That is clear enough, right? So believing you can become like God would be Blasphemy..
Is that enough to make them a cult? How about believing that our god has a god who made Him and he had a god and he had a god and so on....
Mormonism is a dangerous Non Christian Cult... Jim

I don't think it's a cult. My husband's grandma is a Mormon and she never tries to push her religious beliefs onto us. However, if you are talking about the fundamentalist Mormons in Utah that believe in polygamy and marrying their relatives, I would RUN!
