1.)open up your PC and check to see if the data, audio cables are plugged in propperly
2.)check the model of the burner and who made it, just incase theres drivers needed for it
3)right click my computer, click on properties, click on the hardware tab, click on device manager, turn the "+" sign on the dvd/cd to a "-" sign, right click your dvd/cd rom device, click on properties, click on the drivers settings, click on rool back drives then test to see it works, if it dosent uninstall and reinstall drivers
4.)try http://www.burn4free.com/ and test a burning session to see if its the software thats fault
5.)if your burner is more than 5 years old then trash it already , its beggining to break down.

WinXP allows free burning. Enable it. Right click on the drive in My Computers. Click on Properties. Go to Recording Tab. Click "Enable CD writing on this drive". I assume you already have a burner and winxp.

You need to look up your CD/DVD burner on the Internet (I take it you've made sure it's a burner) & see what CD/DVD's it recomemds to use.
What software are you using ? Nero about the best.

there are many free programs out there for buring to cd and dvds visit http://www.download.com and do a search for buring software. also make sure you have blank cd's and dvd's nte there are DVD-R DVD+R DVD-RW DVD+RW DVD-R DL DVD+R DL MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR BURNER, most pc dvd burners are -r compatible
