You send them just as soon as possible. The longer you wait the larger the chance becomes that you'll forget.
We made a list of things as we unwrapped and after the honeymoon we wrote a little note to everyone that was kind enough to think of us that day.
Peggy Post says within three months and I tend to agree. Sometimes if someone has sent a gift through the mail they may also be anxious to know that it was recieved

Congratulations on your wedding, my dear! Now you should probably buckle down and send out your thank you cards. You should send them in no longer than 3 months after the wedding. That's not only accourding to ettiquette, but it's also being kind to the poeple who gave you gifts at your wedding. They put (hopefully) a lot of thought into your gift and a thank you card is the least you can give them. Blessings on your marriage.

If you got the gifts at the wedding and you are back from your honeymoon, get to it. Get it out of the way.

If you get a gift afterwards then get it over with right away. let them pile up and you'll never get it done. Easier to do one or two than 100 at a sitting.

Don't wait at all! Send them immediately! By common etiquette rules, you have up to a year to get them all sent out, but many people actually get offended if they don't get a thank you within a couple of months.

This should be one of the first things you do when you return from your honeymoon. Any longer than a month beyond that time is too long.
