If you go to www.moneysavingexpert.com and click on the travel section, there is lots of tips there for cheap tickets.
If your after cheap air tickets there is a section on there called flight checker which offer flights for a couple of quid but add tax on top which is about a fiver.

you can go to travelocity and enter the information for your flight into fare chaser to get the best rate available at that time. Some travel websites also let you enter information of the cities traveling to and from and what price you would like to pay and then they tell you the time of your flight.

Most Airlines sites offer Internet Fares if you book online. If you call them or a Travel Agent, you will be charged a Service Fee. Be careful of Travelocity and such sites, they are unable to help you make any changes to your reservation once you make it with them.

Plane?/Train?/bus? - which and wherefrom and whereto? - I would have thought it obvious for you to add little details like this into your question in order to get a definitive answer.
