cats cant recognize themselves.

if they see their reflection in the mirror, they would only think that it's another cat and try to scratch them...

i've read that self-recognition is unique only to humans because our brain is well-developed.

definite i think kittens can see themselves in mirrors, inspite of the certainty that some cats are not getting overly excited. If the cat reacts that's a chilled interest for them. have relaxing with the kitten.

Cat's see something in the mirror, but they don't know it's them. they don't have a theory of mind to be able to do that. If you put a red dye spot on a cat's head and then let him see himself in a mirror, he doesn't start washing his face like "Whoa, I got a spot, must clean that up." and you know cats are v. fussy about personal appearance.
They don't seem to think it's another cat either. "yeah" they think "It looks like a cat but it doesn't smell like a cat so I'm not going to get all excited til I smell or hear something.

Of course they can, but most of 'em aren't very interested in their own reflections.

Some say that's a sign that cat's aren't very self-aware. Others say it's a sign that they're not very vain. Still others say they don't know the reflection is them - they just know it's not real because it doesn't smell like a cat.

I think they know, at least some of them, that it's their own reflection. They'd be familiar with reflections from seeing them in puddles. I think they're just not very interested.

I have seen some respond to themselves in the mirror. However, mine never has.

Yes. Kittens are often kinda freaked out by this, but after a while they figure it out and it's just another household item.
