Take a look at your bills for the last couple of months. Add up the amounts for housing, car payments, utilities (I use an average for each utility where I live the utility companies will give you a monthly average based on the past years usage), insurance, etc. that gets paid each month that have a fixed payment. In addition look at your average amount spent on groceries, entertainment, and miscellaneous and add this amount to your total monthly bills. You should also try to plan for at least 10% of income going to savings. A budget would vary by family so this should give you a starting point.

My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids) lives on about $25,000 a year. That includes a house payment with taxes and insurance, auto and life insurance, internet service, cable TV, electricity and gas, groceries, dog and cat food, clothing and toiletries as well as various other items.

The budget for a family of four is directly proportional to your income. If you make $30,000 per year, it will take $30,000 per year to live. You set your budget to work within your means. I know families of 4 that live on $30K and ones that live on $80k. This object is to make your budget work for you.
