Your questions cannot be answered precisely because a lot of factors influence the field of engineering. For example, petroleum engineering is desirable now because the demand is fairly high and the supply fairly low. However, with all of the new technologies being developed to lessen our petroleum dependence, this may not be true in a few years. Environmental engineering jobs are typically on the low end of the pay scale right now, but the increasing awareness of environmental concerns may lead to increased pay in this field.

All true engineers have respectable reputations, although the term engineer has been appropriated by many fields - many traditional engineering branches such as chemical, civil and mechanical would not consider software engineering to be on the same level.

Rather than thinking of it in terms of branches of engineering, think about where you could work. Private sector engineering jobs frequently pay better than public service or government ones. Jobs in academia are typically lower paying as well. Some industries tend to pay better than others - working in pharmaceuticals and chemicals generally pays better than working in transportation. There can be overlap in what branch of engineering can perform a certain job: biomedical, chemical, and materials engineers all frequently work in pharmaceuticals, while mechanical, civil and architectural engineers may be able to fill similar positions in construction.

If you're trying to choose a branch of engineering as a profession, don't base your decision solely on money or reputation. Job security is important, to be sure, but above all make sure you enjoy what you're doing!
