Govenment allotments go back to 1887, over a century ago. Since your posted your question in the genealogy section, I assume you are tracing your family tree. The enrollment records under the Dawes Act that provided for allotments, will provide you a lot of information about your Native American ancestors.

Besides reading the article at http://www.csusm.edu/nadp/asubject.htm check the website for the National Archives. They have the enrollment records posted online for research purposes.

Do a search (google) on '1960s Indian Government money allotment' (without the quotes) as I did. Many articles, websites, etc... will come up including the following. I am sure you can find what you are searching for within these pages.

UNITED STATES V. WHITE MOUNTAINAPACHE TRIBE

Indian Nations Tribal Sovereignty

U.S. Federal Indian policy: Passamaquoddy Resistance

Dawes Commission Index, at www.ancestry.com is also a good source of information on Native Americans as well as http://www.rosecity.net/cherokee/Default.htm

Just a tidbit of information I found in talking with a representative of one of the ancestry sites, a lot of the problems with being Native American or Black, Mexican, or whatever, etc... is that in some of the censuses, all persons were said to be of one race when there may have been other races within family households but because of the racism at that period of time, they were not accounted for properly.

Hope I could help some. Good luck and God bless you

If that is true....then that wasn't enough on the part of the U.S. governement compared to what we did. This was once a peaceful nation and was terribly taken over by illegal immigrants...the white man. which also by the way bought diseases.
