I have 3 dogs and they tell me when they need to go.
Get a bell, the kind that you see on service desks. That you push and it dings. Put it near the door. Each time you take them outside, ding the bell with your foot. They will associate the bell with going outside and ding it themselves.

It took us quite a while to get our pug "trained" also (I say trained in quotes b/c she's not fully housebroke but she's close). I've read and been told that pugs are more stubborn than some breeds so it does take longer than normal to get them trained. Keep your eye on him so you can spot early warning signs. Reward him with praise (and a small treat if you want) when he does do his business outside, and make sure that you're taking him out often. Hope some of that helps, good luck!!

It depends. If male, use a pee post and give lots of praise for going pee outside. If female, give lots of praise for going outside and no matter male or female, take outside every 15 minutes to half hour. You could also train to bark when it has to go by training 'Speak' and saying 'Speak' when the dog goes to the bathroom outside.

rub his nose in the pee as right after he did his job and continue doing it until he stops.
