But as others have said, it was to check for weaponry.

Didn't know about the "weaponry" link. Makes sense. These days though, it is usually the ONLY form of physical contact we make, so it's important.

back in midevil times knights and kings would grab each others wrist to check if they had a weapon on them this is where it came from. i think
