It can vary wildly based on the type of aircraft. The capacity for a Boeing 737 or an Airbus 319 is about 150. For a Boeing 777 which is a big widebody plane then it's over 300 passengers and for a Canadair or Embraer ("regional jet") then it's around 50 or 60 passengers. That's the capacity for these planes, assuming they are full.

Depends on the aircraft used, how the seats are configured, etc. For example, a 737 configured for domestic US coach travel only can carry about 100-120 passengers. A 777 can carry over 300(I think). I'm sure the average is going to be in the low 100's though.
